Meet Jussi...
I'm Jussi and I'm currently working on marketing related things with our Internet Tablet products. After studying and working in Seoul and Tokyo and finishing my thesis on the Nokia 770 hackers, I was more than happy to join the Tablet team here in Helsinki.
Hackers and hobbyists
Having some background in the artistic side of the 90s PC demoscene has helped me see the value of hobbyist work and open formats. Back then, tracking and remixing music with free community tools like FastTracker and Scream Tracker was the only way to go. Using "open" music formats like .mod and .s3m let me learn from others and develop my tracking and sampling skills further. The same goes pretty much for open source nowadays, it just makes sense to help people spread their ideas and learn from each other by making products run and support open source. It's always been the most innovative users who really push new products to become part of our everyday life, so it's fair to say that the development of Internet Tablets is user-driven. To me, this is what "human technology" really is all about and it's a pretty unique feature in high-tech consumer products.
The inner beauty of Internet Tablets
The Nokia N810 is a pretty cool product. It's not for everyone yet, but exploring new things couldn't be more fun than with Internet Tablets. Even though the inner beauty of Internet Tablets is pretty much hidden from everyone except hackers and hobbyists, applications like Canola2, UKMP and Maemopad+ are what really make the Tablet come alive for everyone. And as one of the coolest guys on the scene, Thoughtfix, said to me at CES2008, Internet Tablets are really about making your online and real life come together without compromises. Couldn't have said it better myself. Diggs, tags or some Facebookin', it all goes portable without compromise on OS2008.
As an eternal boy scout, my current favorite app for OS2008 has to be Maemo Mapper. When scouting for new trails, Maemo Mapper loaded up with topographical maps is also something the kids really dig to explore by the campfire. And if there's something that I would like to see coming up on the Tablet, it would definitely be a port of some old-school music tracking app. That would really make it the ultimate tool to get creative on the go...
